Taking stock and looking forward
A research agenda on public research funding

Research funding systems are being asked to address emerging societal and sustainability challenges, to support transformative research and to become more equitable while not compromising their longstanding mission to support breakthrough research and innovation.  This makes the design of funding programs, selection of instruments, engagement of actors and evaluation of outcomes ever more complex.  The theoretical and analytical challenges associated with understanding research funding systems today are substantial.  The publication of the first comprehensive Handbook of Public Research Funding, edited by Benedetto Lepori, Ben Jongbloed and Diana Hicks, offers an occasion to reflect on what we know and where the future research agenda might take us.   This panel will identify core themes for a future research agenda in the field, assess what is known and where the main gaps are and, finally, think about what kinds of (new) data and methods might prove useful.
